WHAT’S COMING UP…

November 16 –18 Wood Show Exhibition Park is one of our biggest annual promotions for wood carving in Nova Scotia. We are looking for volunteers to man our booth. Anyone interested in displaying their work and/or demonstrating at this event, please call Ira Buhot-Perry 443-2330 or Carl Purcell 466-3024.  We need a variety of carvings for a good display, which can be dropped off to Carl before the 15th or at Exhibition Park on set up day

Winter Session 2002
Carve a Brook Trout with Jim Brackett

The next project held at the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural history will be a brook trout.  Jim Brackett is “the master” of wooden fish sculptures. Winning countless awards at competitions, he is the man everyone turns to for detail and accuracy.

Starting on the evening of November 22nd at 8:00 pm, Jim will introduce you to a new 15 inch pattern of a mature brook trout.  Cost of this course is $50.00 which includes  six weeks of instruction, wood blank, eyes and fins.

THANK YOU!

Sheila and Earl Young!
The Avocet course was a huge success, with twenty five members enrolled.  This was the most successful fundraiser in recent years. In addition to providing their time and expertise, Earl and Sheila also donated the pine cut-outs  and their finished Avocet carving for our next raffle! To date over $1,400 was collected from registration alone!  Thank you, Earl and Sheila, for this tremendous contribution.

Fund Raisers: Avocet tickets are now available. We are asking all members to sell the tickets enclosed with this newsletter. Funds for this promotion go directly toward Judges fees during our competition and instruction by the professional carvers and painters. These funds also help to keep our membership dues  at $15.00

Along with the Avocet promotion we also have a donation of a wildlife print and stamp donated by Sherman Hines. Tickets for the Framed wildlife print are also enclosed. If anyone requires more tickets please drop a line to Alan Dorey. We can provide as many as you can sell.

Silent  Auction

The Sanderling carving donated by Glenn McMurdo will be  auctioned off at the wood show at exhibition park this November.

A silent auction sheet will be made available on the display table along with the carving. This is a beautiful  soft sculpture of a sleeping Sanderling carved by one of Canada’s most prestigious carvers.

The Sanderling will go to the highest bidder at 3:00 on Sunday November  18.

Competiting Members

Two of our members have successfully competed at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Festival in Ontario. Keith Cheyne  picked up a second place ribbon for his Long tail drake in Intermediate class.  Nice job Keith!

Frank Randall competed in Novice, and cleaned up with 3 firsts, 2 seconds, and a 3rd Best of Division for his green-winged teal - amazing for a person who’s been carving for two years. Frank’s always had an  interest in birds but really caught the carving bug after taking a week-long course at the Haliburton School of Arts in Ontario.

Since that initial course Frank has been constantly seeking information.  He has sought out the best for instruction, and will stop at nothing to gain more knowledge.  Don’t let this mild spoken gentleman fool you. When it comes to competition, he is going for the win. In the last two years, Frank competed in three competitions from here to Ontario, and has traveled south to the Maine Coast Carving Competition where his entries were nearly refused in Novice because of their quality.   Next stop?  Maryland, I’m sure!

Decoy Theft

A number of carvings were stolen from the Grand Pre area.  The most valuable  was a  wood duck belonging to the Youngs. Any information on these carvings should be passed on to the RCMP.
