From the President:

Carl Purcell,Jim Bracket, Wilson Crowell, Brian Galletly and I made a trip down to Bridgewater to visit their group. The coffee pot was on when we arrived and the fellowship and warm welcome we received was fantastic. We were able to answer some of the groups concerns and exchange information about the library and what the association had to offer. Jim, Wilson, Carl, and Brian were able to share some of their carving with the Bridgewater Carvers. It was nice to see you guys again and we hope to see you in the near future.

As you have heard at the meeting on March 12, I will not be letting my name stand for President. I have served the N.S.W.C.&A.A. for the past two years and it is time to let someone new take over. I know it will bring in new ideas to the Association. I hope during my tenure as President, that I was able to satisfy the needs of the carvers, and to see that the Association was for all members to enjoy and learn the art of carving.

I was very fortunate to have the support of the Executive working with me and I would like to thank Carl, Brian and Dick for all the support the gave me. I would also like to thank the Chairperson of each of the committees; Daphne Coveyduc for phone, Ed Dawson for workshops, Doug Gregory for library, Dick Bone for competition, Roger Beaupre for the newsletter, Brian Galletly for membership and Ken Woods for ticket sales. I would also like to thank the members who gave me their support for without you I would have been lost. It is your hard work and dedication that has made the Nova Scotia Wood Carvers and Artists Association what it is today. I thank-you from the bottom of my heart, and I hope I will always be here to lend a helping hand to the Association.

Yours Truly
Thelma Galletly

If you are interested in filling any of these positions please contact Thelma.

Colchester Chapter Report

The Colchester Chapter of the Nova Scotia Wildlife Carvers & Artists Association has been quite active since its creation. We are advertised on cable TV several times a day on a daily basis, and are listed in the Red Letter Days of the Daily News and Community Callander if the same publication.

We had a workshop on airbrushing with carver Ron Fancy on January 20th which was very informative. Thanks Ron. Then on February 8th, we were fortunate to tap into the wonders of Wilson Crowell's approach to carving in a Sunday workshop. This was a joy, and well attended, and led us into a three day workshop to be held 4,5 and 6th of April in Truro. We are really looking forward to this, and will be carving a Black- Capped Chickadee.

On February 17th, Ken Peterson spent the evening in a workshop answering our many questions, and still managed to find time to give us a few pointers in burning and texturing. This was another great evening, and much appreciated.

Our last workshop was a sculpting demonstration by a local sculptor, artist and carver Bruce Wood. This was a terrific session in that Bruce showed us how to use modeling compound to work out problems in clay before starting on your wood. We also got to see the end result in 3 Horses he is doing. We would like to thank him for his knowledgeable contribution to the club.

We are presently selling tickets on a Grizzly Bear, carved in Maple and donated by fellow carver Kim Crowe. The draw will be held at the end of March and will be our first major fund raiser. Thanks to Kim for parting with his creation in support of, "the cause".

We have had newspaper coverage in the Daily News and The Weekly Record on both the workshop put on by Wilson and on the Bear raffle.

To date we have received two local sponsors for the Competition in May, and are hoping to acquire a few more before the deadline.

We have been happy to share some great reference material with the Association and our fellow branch members in Bridgewater, compliments of Gerald Gloade. Thanks Gerald, you can never have enough reference material.

We have approximately fifteen regular members and are gaining more as we become better known. Most are new carvers and if it wasn't for the tremendous help of Gerry Simpson, we would all be very frustrated. We would like him to know how much we appreciate all of his efforts on our behalf. Thank you Gerry.

In Residence Carving/ Painting Course

In May of 1996 the Executive of the Carving Association asked its membership for ideas to expand its program and reach its members.

One of the ideas suggested was a comprehensive carving/painting course by a world renown carver.

The following information is submitted to the membership for comment and decision making at the May 1997 meeting.

Event: 4 Day Carving / Painting Course
Place: Liscombe Lodge
Time: Week of the 1998 May competition
Lodging and Meals: $89.00 per day per person or $356.00.
Registration Fee: To be determined

Cost to the Association
Instructor's daily rate $350.00 for a total of $1,400.00.
Liscombe Lodge will subsidize this amount $400.00 leaving the instructor fee at $1,000.00.

The instructor's lodgings and meals are also provided free.

Air fare for the instructor would be approximately $630.00. If we were to bring in an outside World Class Carver to judge our competition this fee would be automatically paid as part of the competition.

Workshops

The final workshop will be on 19 Apr. And it will be on eye placement done by George German.
