QUOTE OF THE DAY: THE HEN IS THE EGGS WAY OF PRODUCING ANOTHER EGG.

PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS: Since our last newsletter the "Year of Wildlife in Wood" has had it's official opening in Truro with enthusiastic representation from the carving community. I want to thank all who in any way helped to give a good start to this exciting year. We will soon see the display move to PICTOU. Watch for it!

We have just had a successful "Showing of the Colours" at the RV Show in Halifax where many of the metro carvers donated their time, set up, demonstrated carving and looked after the booth.

Remember that the Annual Competition is the last weekend of May this year at the Museum of Natural History on Summer ST. in Halifax. You should receive a package related to this, as part of this News Letter mailout.

Please be aware that the cost of our annual competition is between $9000. and $10,000. One of our main fund raisers is selling raffle tickets so please do your part by selling or buying the book we have provided with this letter.

As part of the " Wildife in Wood" theme this year we are having a juried exhibit of the work of "Nova Scotia Wildlife Carver's and Artists". We are looking for approximately 75 to 85 carvings for this show. This show is from July 11th until Sept.16 th. Your carving must stay at the gallery for the entire exhibit once it has been selected. Please contact George German or Dick Bone. They require the carvings to be delivered to Dick's house during the week immediately following our annual competition. At present time we are only asking for 1 carving only from each interested carver. As part of this show, there will be a display of carvings of past winners of the Bowater Trophy.

REMEMBER that our annual meeting is the second Thursday in May. Two items of business will be (1) to update the Bylaws and (2) election of officers for the next year.

Finally, I would like to thank all carvers who assisted in the bringing of our name forward during the past year. This includes carvers who donated their time to serve on the executive, give workshops, demonstrations, displays, sell tickets, set up booths or dismantle them, make phone calls, and news letter. I would add a very special thank you those who gave up their carvings for the whole year to the travelling road show celebrating the "Year Of Wildlife in Wood".

NOVICE CORNER:

BURN OR STONE IT: Often when people start carving the first thing they want to do is texture. It is an affliction that we have all suffered from at one time or another. Since you cannot be persuaded to do a "smoothy", because you think people will think you can not carve or some other such nonsense, let me offer some advice. THERE IS NO NEED TO BURN EVERY BIT OF SURFACE ON YOUR PIECE. Countless hours have been spent burning line after line only to have the piece look" hard" and uninviting. The school of thought is this, where it is

dark burn and where it is light and "fluffy" stone. The thing before you start, as in anything, is to do the legwork. Research not only the facts but also the methodology that other carvers have used to achieve their results.

WANTED: As year end is fast approaching, it is time to look to the upcoming year, starting in Sept. 99 A normal transition is expected, and with that comes the inevitability that some club positions are going to be left vacant. One such position is the NewsLetter.

NOTE: although not essential, a word processor does make the task easier.
